Last night the Office of Tenebrae was sung in our church. The psalms were sung to Gregorian chant by Br Paul's Chant Group, along with the Fathers & Brothers, while Caelestis sang the responsories by Palestrina and Victoria, the Christus Factus Est by Anerio, and gave an amazing rendition of Allegri's Miserere.

As the psalms are sung the fifteen candles on the hearse are gradually extingushed, until the church is in darkness - but one lit candle is hidden.

The ‘strepitus’ at the end of Tenebrae is a loud noise to denote the at the death of Christ. Then the candle which had been hidden is brought out as a sign of our hope in His Resurrection.
